My speaking students showcased for the first time last week -- and I'm so proud of them!
The showcase was held at Flappers Comedy Club, and it was one of the most unusual showcases they had ever had: "An Evening of Kick Butt Inspiration."
It was an amazing night, because the audience left with much more than just laughs. They left with inspiration and motivation from talks ranging from "How to Dress to Express" to "How to be a Better Nurse and take the RN out of BuRNout."
Each of the students found their message - AND related it to bookable topics. Matter of fact, after the show several students got booked on the spot. (Woo hoo!)
Most of my students are stand-up comics who are adding speaking to their skill set so they can increase their range of opportunities. But, the flow of energy in speaking is a little different than in comedy; for many of them, it took courage to shift their focus to GIVING a message rather than GETTING laughs.
Even though many did get plenty of laughs, they gave to the audience by sharing their intimate stories and experiences. And -- allowing themselves to be vulnerable really paid off - because audience members were not only entertained, but also moved.
Commenting on the adventure of going from comic to speaker, Jackie Fabulous summed it up nicely:
"The biggest compliment I got Sunday was an audience member not in your class saying to me, 'Thank you for your message.' I reached her ... and that is way more gratifying than the free hot wings offered by most comedy clubs. This will be my new profession."
